Missed call text back for plumbers: emergency calls, wording and tool choice

Last materially reviewed 2026-10-03

Quick answerPlumbers on Jobber should add its $29 a month AI Receptionist. Plumbers without job software can use GoHighLevel Starter at $97 a month plus roughly $3 to $4 of usage.

What a plumber needs the text back to do

Missed call text back for plumbers sends an automatic SMS to a caller you could not answer, and for this trade the text has one job above all: sort an emergency from a routine request. A plumber under a sink or driving between jobs cannot pick up, and a caller with water coming through a ceiling will not wait for a callback. A caller wanting a quote for a bathroom refit will.

So the message should ask one sorting question and tell the urgent caller exactly what to do next. That is different from a studio or an office line, where the text only needs to hold the inquiry until someone is free.

Emergency and routine calls need different hours rules

Plumbing calls arrive at all hours, and the out-of-hours ones are often the urgent ones. Decide three things before you write any message.

  • Who is on call at night. If nobody is, say so in the text and give the time you reopen. Do not imply a response you cannot give.
  • How fast the phone gives up. GoHighLevel treats a call as missed when it rings past the Incoming Call Timeout, and its help center recommends 10 to 20 seconds. A short timeout gets the text out sooner.
  • What happens on repeat calls. A panicking caller redials. GoHighLevel's standard feature texts on every missed call, so three calls means three identical texts unless you replace it with a workflow that includes a wait step.

The after-hours response page covers the night and weekend decision in more detail.

Example messages for a plumbing business

These are written for this page, not taken from any vendor.

  • Working hours: Sorry we missed you, this is Riverside Plumbing. We are on a job. Is this an emergency such as a leak or no water? Reply YES and your ZIP code and we will call you first.
  • Night with on-call cover: Riverside Plumbing here. For a burst pipe or flooding, reply URGENT with your address and the on-call plumber will call you. For anything else we will call after 7am.
  • Night without cover: Riverside Plumbing is closed until 7am. If water is leaking, turn off your main shutoff valve. Reply with your address and the problem and you will be our first call in the morning.

A reply of YES or URGENT is only useful if a person sees it. In GoHighLevel a workflow can send an internal notification to a user by SMS, email or the app when a reply arrives. Handing a text conversation to a person explains the handoff.

GoHighLevel plan and a worked cost for 80 missed calls

The lowest GoHighLevel plan, Starter at $97 a month, lists unlimited users and all core features, and the help article for the feature names no higher plan. Phone usage is billed on top. This example assumes 80 missed calls a month, one single-segment text each, a local number and a Low Volume Standard registration.

GoHighLevel monthly cost for a plumber with 80 missed calls, prices as read on 3 October 2026
ItemCalculationMonthly cost
Starter subscriptionFlat$97.00
Local phone number1 x $1.15$1.15
A2P campaign feeLow Volume Mixed$1.50
Outbound texts80 x $0.00747$0.60
Carrier fee80 x $0.0050 (Verizon rate)$0.40
Total$100.65

Add a one-time $22.50 registration fee. Customer replies and call minutes are billed too, at $0.00747 per inbound segment and $0.01165 per inbound minute, so a busy month costs a few dollars more.

One limitation, and when Jobber is the better tool

The limitation that matters to plumbers is that GoHighLevel's text is a fixed message. It cannot ask follow-up questions or book a visit on its own, and it does not dispatch a technician. Anything smarter has to be built as a workflow or handled by a person reading replies.

If you already quote, schedule and invoice in Jobber, its AI Receptionist is the closer fit. Jobber's site says it answers calls and texts at any hour, texts back callers who hang up, can book a visit or take a request, and transfers urgent calls based on keywords you set. It is a $29 a month add-on, and Jobber's plans start at $29 a month billed annually or $49 with no commitment. Compare both products in GoHighLevel vs Jobber.
